We offer a comprehensive and customizable portfolio of products, services, and solutions called Michelin Beter Mining that is designed to help maximize safety, boost mine productivity, and improve your environmental and social impact across your entire mining operations.

A few ways Michelin Better Mining is built to support your mine productivity:

Innovative Mining Tyre Technology

A technological leader in motion, Michelin has a history of innovative firsts for the mining industry. We introduced the first radial earthmover tyre in 1959 and then launched the mining industry’s first 63” tyre in 1995, which opened the doors to a whole new category of mining trucks.

Michelin continues to evolve its innovative tyre technology designed to deliver industry-leading energy efficiency and productivity while working closely with OEMs to support future mining equipment evolutions, including electric and autonomous vehicles.

Michelin Support Team

When you put MICHELIN tyres to work for your mine operations, you get more than just innovative tyre technology; you gain access to your own Michelin support team of account managers, customer engineering support, and service engineers. Michelin support teams combine local mining expertise with global mining industry experience to support you in achieving your production targets through:

  • Tyre recommendations customized to your mine site conditions

  • Scrap tyre analysis to uncover the root cause of premature tyre failure and recommend ways to correct and extend tyre life

  • Tyre management best practices aimed at helping improve safety, mine productivity, and efficiencies

  • Data-driven insights and recommendations for better haul road maintenance, optimized truck routes and cycle times, and more.

Mining Tyre Pressure and Monitoring Solutions

Michelin introduced the mining industry’s first tyre pressure monitoring system in 2006. Now in its 4th generation, MICHELIN MEMS 4 is a tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system that is built to boost mining fleet and mining tyre performance through remote monitoring of tyre pressure and temperature and continuous tracking of tyre usage.

MICHELIN MEMS 4 provides mining fleet data to mines worldwide and incorporates GPS tracking with severity maps and geofencing capabilities for operational insights and optional features designed to help improve operational efficiency. Customized reporting enables users to analyze trends and uncover actionable insights through personalized, scheduled reports, tailored to specific needs. The Fixed Station feature allows continuous monitoring of tyre pressure and temperature in the tyre shop - even when the trucks are powered off.

Moreover, the use of MICHELIN MEMS 4 can help support sustainability goals by helping extend tyre life and improve fuel efficiency. Effective tyre pressure management can help reduce the frequency of tyre replacements, help lower raw material consumption, and help minimize the environmental footprint of mining operations.

Michelin also offers an entry-level, budget-friendly tyre pressure monitoring system for rigid dump trucks below 150T -  MICHELIN MEMS LITE. MICHELIN MEMS LITE periodically captures and transmits tyre pressure and temperature data – designed to help add safety and savings to your mining operations.

DEVELOPED TO HELP YOUR MINE’S ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT

Michelin is committed to working with you to help improve your mine's energy efficiency, operational performance, and community and regulatory relations. Together, we go farther faster.

Renewable and Recycled Materials

sustainability in the mining industry with recycled and renewable materials in mining tyres

sustainability in the mining industry with recycled and renewable materials in mining tyres

By 2050, Michelin Group has committed to integrating 100% renewable or recycled materials into our tyres. This commitment lowers Michelin Group's dependence on finite raw materials while aiding in a more circular economy through the increased use of recycled waste. In partnership with leading global companies in recycled and renewable materials, Michelin Group is laying out a roadmap to full circularity by 2050 without compromising the quality or performance of our tyres.

Energy Efficient Tyres

Based on data from Life Cycle Assessments, between 70 to 90% of our tyre’s environmental impact occurs while it’s in use. Understanding what impedes a mining truck’s forward movement is important to help address the energy efficiency of our tyres.

Energy efficiency, including the reduction of rolling and motion resistance, and the proper use of mining tyres can help mine fleets reduce their fuel consumption and lower production costs.

Reducing Impact Across the Tyre Life Cycle

Tyre life cycle assessment in mining industry

Tyre life cycle assessment in mining industry

Our mining tyres need to have as little impact as possible on the environment over their lifecycles. To help mitigate these impacts, Michelin uses Life Cycle Assessments to measure the environmental impacts of our tyres and services from raw materials to manufacturing to finished-goods shipments to use and end of life.

Helping Lead the Way in End-of-Life Tyre Solutions

Michelin is working across the mining industry to identify agile solutions that can be adapted to local context for greater environmental and social impact. These initiatives include:

  • Chile: Michelin’s First Mining Tyre Cutting and Shredding Facility

  • Peru: Partnership Neuma Peru Recycling Facility

  • Brazil: Managing ELTs in Brazil for more than 10 years

  • Exploring partnerships in South Africa, West Africa and Australia
