MICHELIN X® LINE ENERGY™ TYRE
What tyre size do I need for my truck?
Tyre size must be compatible with your truck. It also determines how efficiently and safely goods are transported. What information does it contain? Does the truck's use play a part in the choice of tyre size? In short, what tyre size is ideal for your truck? Find out everything you need to know about tyre sizes to make the right choice.
SUMMARY
The importance of truck tyre size
Truck tyre size contains a number of essential pieces of information that determine their compatibility (or incompatibility) with a vehicle. These include:
- the width of the tyre in millimeters
- the aspect ratio (determines the height as a percentage of the width)
- the type of construction (example: R for ‘Radial’)
- the wheel diameter in inches
- the load rating (corresponds to the maximum load the tyre can support)
- the speed rating (corresponds to the maximum speed at which the tyre can be driven)
We will explain each of them in detail further on in this article.
The vehicle manufacturer recommends certain dimensions for the truck. Generally speaking, the wisest thing to do is to stick to them. However, when you buy a truck, you can sometimes choose a tyre size other than the one recommended. As we'll see below, this can be decided according to the particular use you want to make of the truck.
Once your truck has been purchased and when the need arises to replace one or more tyres, it is generally advisable to keep the same size as the one originally fitted.
Where can I find my tyre size?
Each tyre has its full size written on the sidewall, along with a number of other useful details. All tyre markings reveal a great deal of information about the tyre. The diagram below explains this information in detail.
TYRE MARKINGS EXPLAINED
1 - Tyre size designation: 315/70 R 22.5
2 - Load rating and speed rating: 154/150 L
3 - Singular point: any additional load ratings and speed ratings
4 - Category of use:
- 3PMSF/M+S : 'snow’ category tyres in accordance with “R54” (EC) regulations
- 661/2009 : 'snow’ category tyres in accordance with “R117” regulations.
- Traction: tyres for traction use in accordance with ‘R117’ regulations
5 - Tyre position code - in our example, D for ‘DRIVE’ = drive axle
6 - Rolling direction
7 - Tubless: mounting without inner tube

8 - Tyre range: X® MULTI
9 - Tyre structure indication: RADIAL
10 - Regroovable: indication that the tyre is regroovable
11 - Manufacturer's brand: MICHELIN
12 - EEC type-approval number: E2
13 - X®: MICHELIN Radial tyre symbol
14 - Date: sequence ending in 4 digits, indicating the date of manufacture of the tyre (ex. : 2710 = 27th week of 2010)
15 - Brand tyre zone: an area where the tyre can be hot-marked.
Tyre size explained
In the example in our diagram, the tyre has the following size: 315/70 R 22.5 154/150 L. This means that:
- it is 315 mm wide
- its height is 70% of 315 mm
- it is of Radial construction (letter R)
- its diameter is 22.5 inches
- 154/150 are its load ratings
- L is its speed rating
To find out how the load and speed ratings correspond, simply refer to the tyre load rating chart and tyre speed rating chart below:
Truck tyre load rating chart
Continuing with our example, we can see that load rating 154 corresponds to a maximum load of 3750 kg:

Truck tyre speed rating chart
In the speed rating chart, we see that speed rating L corresponds to a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
It is important that the load rating corresponds to the maximum load capacity of the axle for which it is intended.

Choosing the right tyre size for your specific use
We said earlier that tyre sizes can be chosen according to the intended use of the vehicle. Here are a few examples:
1 - If you need a greater load volume
Small-diameter tyres reduce the overall height of the truck, which increases the interior height of the semi-trailer so that a greater load volume can be carried. Whenever possible, this optimisation improves productivity by reducing the number of vehicles needed on the road.
For vehicles carrying voluminous but light goods, for example, smaller diameter tyres can be used to increase the interior volume of the semi-trailer while respecting the 4 metre height limit required in certain countries. However, we do not recommend small diameter tyres for long distances.
2 - If you need more ground clearance
For driving in the mountains, for example, or on roads with more aggressive surfaces, larger-diameter tyres are recommended. They provide greater ground clearance to prevent the underbody from being damaged.
What about performance?
It should be noted that modern technology makes it possible to obtain comparable performance between different tyre sizes (e.g. service life, robustness and grip), although some sizes offer higher load ratings.
Larger tyres generally have higher load ratings, which can be a determining factor for some customers.
If in doubt, please ask your dealer for advice.
